Compass Box The Double Single Blended Scotch Whisky
Compass Box The Double Single Blended Scotch Whisky is the third edition of Compass Box’s two-part blend, bottled in March 2017 at 92 proof, 5,838 bottles. Duncan Elphick and Tatsuya Minagawa of The Highlander Inn in Craigellachie asked John Glaser to prove a Scotch blend could be one single malt and one single grain. This edition is 72% Glen Elgin from re-charred ex-bourbon hogsheads and 28% Girvan grain from re-charred ex-bourbon barrels. Re-charring those casks is why orchard fruit arrives with toasted vanilla and toffee instead of a pale refill taste. Natural colour, not chill-filtered.
Vanilla frosting, cream, and honey lead into silky butterscotch, dried banana, apple, and pear. Cinnamon and clove sit on an oily, medium-full body. The Girvan gives cream; the Glen Elgin gives fruit and malt. The finish holds vanilla, raisin, and a little spice.
