Compass Box The Spice Tree Extravaganza Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Compass Box The Spice Tree Extravaganza Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is the 2016 limited edition of 12,240 bottles, bottled at 92 proof to mark ten years since the original Spice Tree was pulled from sale. It is not a louder core Spice Tree. John Glaser rebuilt the idea with older malt and a large share of first-fill sherry: Glen Ord and Benrinnes from sherry butts, plus the Highland blend of Clynelish, Dailuaine, and Teaninich given another four and a half years in the hybrid French-and-American oak casks. Natural colour, not chill-filtered.
Sherry wine and dark berries lead, with plum, raspberry, and the sweet-shop richness Compass Box printed on the fact sheet. The palate is juicy red fruit and brown sugar, then the familiar Spice Tree ginger and clove, with oak and a thread of tobacco. It finishes long and spicy, pepper and chocolate drying the fruit so the extra age does not turn jammy.
