Compass Box Vellichor Blended Scotch Whisky is the January 2022 limited edition of 3,246 bottles, bottled at 89.2 proof, made to smell like a second-hand bookshop. The word is John Koenig’s name for that dusty, leather-and-paper air; James Saxon chased it with long-aged parcels, not with the maritime peat-and-sherry blending of Ultramarine. The youngest piece is 23-year-old Macallan from first-fill bourbon barrels. Highland Park supplies the dry leather. Sherry-matured blended stocks, including a parcel left extra years in a refill butt, bring cake and cooked fruit, and a last cask of old Caol Ila, used before in Flaming Heart, adds a quiet, antique smoke.
Leather, polished furniture, and the crackling dust of old pages lead. The palate is thick and chewy: malt, tropical fruit, and sherry, with honey, dark fruit, and a delicate peat that stays rather than shouts. The finish is long and waxy, tobacco and fruit still in the glass.
