Crown Royal XR Extra Rare Canadian Whisky is the LaSalle Extra Rare, a prestige blend that folds one of the last batches from the shuttered LaSalle Distillery into Gimli stocks. That leftover LaSalle rye flavoring whisky is the reason to buy it: fruit and spice that Deluxe never shows, and a different liquid from Crown Royal Aged 18 Years, which is Gimli whisky with no LaSalle claim. Andrew MacKay built the vatting. It is a limited Extra Rare release, bottled at 80 proof. A bottle you can open for guests without overthinking the pour.
Dried fruit and honey lead, with Canadian rye spice cutting through and raisins and cocoa on the back. The sip is creamy, then peppery, and polished oak carries a long, warm finish of brown sugar and stewed fruit.
