Barbados rum tends toward elegance, and this one takes that reputation somewhere heavier. Fourteen years in ex-bourbon and Madeira casks, no additives, and a cask-strength bottling at 124 proof (62% ABV) give it a density most island rums never reach. Tropical maturation moves faster than aging in cooler climates, and the years show in the color and the grip.

Raspberry comes through bright and unexpected against a base of dark chocolate, and there is coconut sitting just underneath, sweet but never sugary. Leather runs through the back half. Star anise and nutmeg give the finish a warm spice edge that lingers well past the swallow, with vanilla smoothing the seams.

At this strength it takes a drop of dilution gracefully, though plenty of drinkers will want it as it comes. A 750 mL bottle from St. Philip, on the southeastern coast of the island, and a genuinely rewarding pour for an ordinary evening you feel like making better.
