Glenglassaugh Sandend Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the coastal malt named for Sandend Bay, where the distillery sits above the North Sea at Portsoy. Bourbon, sherry, and manzanilla casks in those seaside warehouses put tropical fruit next to a crack of salt: the manzanilla is why the sweetness stays bright instead of sticky. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 101 proof, which is why it stays vivid as it opens. Whisky Advocate named it 2023 Whisky of the Year. Pour it over a large cube.
Vanilla ice cream and tropical fruit lead, with chocolate and sea salt behind them. Salted caramel runs through a creamy sip, then pineapple, cherry, and grapefruit sparkle, and peach, apricot, honey, and pound cake fill the middle. Rolling spice and that ocean-breeze salt keep the finish long.
