Graham’s 40 Year Old Tawny Port
Pour this into a small glass and serve it cool but not cold, and it turns thick and slow, coating the sides as it goes. Dried fruit and raisin lead, dense and sweet, with toffee underneath and a walnut dryness that keeps the sweetness in check. Honey and orange peel lift the finish, which lingers well past the last sip.
Forty years in seasoned oak casks account for the color and the concentration. Time in wood pulls a tawny port away from the dark fruit of its youth toward something nuttier and more caramelized, and four decades is a long stretch of that slow change. At 20% ABV, it drinks richly without heat.
The fruit comes from the Douro in Portugal, blended from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. A note of chocolate runs through the whole thing. The 750 mL bottle keeps well once opened, so a small glass after dinner is an easy habit.
