Habitation Velier Hampden HGML 2018 Pure Single Jamaican Rum
This is a loud rum. Distilled in 2018 in Jamaica's Trelawny parish, it carries the high-ester character that makes Hampden's spirit so recognizable: overripe banana and pineapple up front, with a sharp solvent edge running underneath that never quite settles down.
Four years in ex-bourbon casks under tropical conditions, where spirit matures faster than it would in a cooler climate, have rounded the edges without taming much. There is a briny olive note in the background, and citrus peel and spice sharpen the finish. At 118 proof, it drinks hot and undiluted straight from the bottle, which is the point of cask strength. Additive free, so what you taste is the distillate and the wood.
The 750 mL bottle works neat for anyone who likes their Jamaican rum funky, and it holds its shape in a daiquiri or a tiki build where lesser rums disappear.
