L’Encantada Domaine Lous Pibous 2002 Bas-Armagnac
Armagnac rewards patience, and this Bas-Armagnac from Domaine Lous Pibous shows why. Distilled in 2002 from Baco 22A, the grape that gives Gascony its plummy weight, it spent 18 years in a single Gascon oak cask and went into the bottle at cask strength, undiluted.
Prune and fig lead, dark and jammy without turning sweet. Underneath sits tobacco leaf and a dusting of baking spice, while vanilla softens the edges and rancio — that savory, faintly nutty note older Armagnac earns with time — runs through the finish. Being a single barrel, it carries the fingerprint of one cask rather than the smoothed-out average of many.
The full strength means it drinks best slowly, in small pours, over the course of an evening. A 750 mL bottle of something with this much age behind it is worth keeping open on the shelf rather than saving for a date that never comes.
