Lagavulin 11 Year Old Sweet Peat Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is Lagavulin's first new permanent bottling in nine years: eleven years exclusively in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 86 proof. Heavily peated malt, Islay water, wooden washbacks, and the distillery's squat pear-shaped stills keep peat at the center, while those bourbon barrels are why toffee apple and vanilla show up beside the smoke. Peat smoke and a little salinity open on honeyed malt and toffee apple. Strawberry jam, dark chocolate, and sugared coffee stand out on the palate in a medium, smooth body, and the finish is long, spice and peat holding the sweetness in check, with soft vanilla at the end.
