Laphroaig 25 Year Old Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the 2023 edition: floor-malted spirit filled in 1998 and aged twenty-five years in ex-bourbon casks, then bottled non-chill-filtered at natural cask strength, 94.6 proof (47.3% ABV). A quarter-century in American oak is what you taste as tropical fruit and pastry sweetness, with the peat settled into a long, soft smoke. This limited Islay bottling is an after-dinner dram.
Pear drops, green apple, custard, and warm pastry open the glass, with smoked ham and cinnamon underneath. The palate turns to pineapple, peach, and mango, then white pepper and barbecued orange rind. It coats rather than burns, and the finish runs long, soft, and smoky.
