Mars The Y.A. No. 1 Blended Malt Japanese Whisky is the 2022 first edition of Hombo’s Yakushima Aging series: malt from Mars Komagatake and Mars Tsunuki, matured in the humid cellar on World Heritage Yakushima, primarily in ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 104 proof (52% ABV). The island’s heat, rain, and sea air are what you taste as tropical fruit and a thread of salt. This limited blended malt is a pour over a large cube.
Mango, pineapple, and honeydew open with vanilla and sea salt. The palate is creamy — honey, custard, candied tropical fruit, taffy — then pepper, ginger, and clove, with a warm finish of malt, light smoke, and a whisper of the tide.
