Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey 2025 Release
Kentucky sour mash, bottled from the 2025 release. Toasted French oak does most of the shaping here, and it shows up as sweetness rather than tannin: caramel first, then a run of dark fruit that keeps the whiskey from turning flat or candied.
At 91.2 proof, the texture is easygoing. Vanilla sits close to the caramel without taking over, and baking spice picks up toward the back, warm rather than sharp. Underneath all of it runs a note of toasted grain and oak, the kind of dry, bready character that reminds you the mash matters as much as the barrel.
This is a straightforward pour and drinks well that way, though the sweeter side of the profile holds up fine in an Old Fashioned. Sold in a 750 mL bottle.
