The Balvenie 40 Year Old Rare Marriages Single Malt Scotch Whisky is Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE's marriage of traditional oak casks and European oak sherry butts that have lain in the Dufftown warehouses for at least forty years. Refill oak is why the whisky still drinks honeyed after four decades; the sherry butts are why dried fruit, ginger, and spice join that honey. Bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) and tightly allocated. Pour it while sipping with friends.
Dried apricot, citrus, and ginger open, then orange blossom, candied ginger, cinnamon, and honey coat a silky sip. Mouth-coating vanilla and a delicate sherried fruitiness follow. The finish is warm and elegant, honey and citrus holding after the spice fades.
