The Balvenie A Day of Dark Barley 26 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The Balvenie A Day of Dark Barley 26 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a limited 2019 Stories bottling of David Stewart's 1992 experiment: dark-roasted malt of the kind used for stout was mashed with Balvenie's usual floor-malted barley and filled into first-fill bourbon casks. That roast is what you taste as coffee, cocoa, and extra toast under the honey. The whisky sat twenty-six years; this expression is drawn from a single first-fill bourbon cask and bottled at 95.6 proof (47.8% ABV). It is a cold-weather pour.
Brown sugar, vanilla toffee, and blossom honey lead a syrupy sip, then orange peel, cinnamon, and ginger cut through. Coffee and dark chocolate from the roasted malt sit underneath. The finish is long and warm: vanilla, spice, and a last flicker of citrus.
