The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is David C. Stewart's original cask-finishing malt from Dufftown: about twelve years in American oak for vanilla spice, then nine months in first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry casks for fruit and honey. That second wood is why the whisky drinks nutty and sherried while the first cask still shows vanilla. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV). The distillery still floor-malts its own barley. Pour it while sipping with friends.
Sweet fruit, Oloroso sherry, honey, and vanilla lead a smooth, mellow sip. Nutty sweetness and cinnamon spice stand out on the palate, with a light sherry layer that keeps the honey from turning simple. The finish is long and warming.
