The Hakushu 18 Year Old Japanese Single Malt Whisky is Suntory's long-aged malt from the mountain forest distillery on the slopes of Mt. Kaikomagatake in Yamanashi. Eighteen years in American and European oak is what you taste as ripe fruit and cool herbs, with a light peat run keeping a thread of smoke under the mint. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) and tightly allocated. Pour it as an after-dinner dram.
Ripe pear, dried mint, and oregano lead, then jasmine, mango, and quince stand out on the palate with a cool menthol lift. The mouthfeel stays polished rather than thick. The finish is long and pleasantly smoked, with a last hint of bitterness that keeps the fruit from turning candy-sweet.
