The Kurayoshi 18 Year Old Pure Malt Japanese Whisky is Matsui Shuzo's flagship vatted malt from Tottori, bottled after more than eighteen years in American white oak and cut with spring water from Mount Daisen. That long white-oak rest is what you taste as honey and vanilla; 100 proof is why spice and mint stay vivid. Jim Murray named it Japanese Whisky of the Year in 2022. Honey, vanilla, and orange peel open, then pepper, clove, and root ginger stand out on the palate with a thread of smoke. The mouthfeel is oily and full at this strength. Mint and oak spice linger on a long, warming finish.
