The Yamazaki 18 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky comes from Japan's first malt distillery, in Shimamoto at the edge of Kyoto. Malts aged more than 18 years in American, Spanish, and Mizunara oak are vatted together, with Spanish sherry oak leading so dried fruit turns into café au lait and dark chocolate while Mizunara adds a quiet incense spice. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) and tightly allocated. An after-dinner dram.
Raisin and apricot open the glass, then café au lait. Blackberry and strawberry jam stand out on the palate against dark chocolate; the sip is smooth and full, and the finish runs long, spicy, and polished.
