Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut Champagne
Crisp apple and citrus come through first, bright and clean, with brioche sitting underneath from time spent on the lees in bottle. Almond and a touch of vanilla fill out the middle weight, and a mineral edge keeps the finish dry rather than soft. It drinks the way a good Brut should: fresh, straightforward, easy to keep pouring.
The blend draws on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, the three grapes of Champagne, and the result is balanced rather than showy. At 12% ABV it stays light on its feet through a long evening. Nothing here demands close study, though there is enough detail to reward it.
This is the 1.5 L magnum, which means one bottle covers a table of eight or ten with room for a second round. Chill it properly, well ahead of time, and pull it out when people arrive.
