Yamato Japanese Whisky is Aiko Importers’ small-batch blend from one of Yamanashi Prefecture’s largest distilleries, southwest of Tokyo: malted Scotch whisky married to grain distillate from Kofu Basin grain, aged three to eight years in Mizunara oak, and bottled without chill filtration at 80 proof. Cold winters and hot summers around Mt. Fuji work that porous Japanese oak, so honeycomb, toffee, and a plump barley sweetness show without peat. Whisky Advocate scored it 90 points. Keep it as a weeknight pour.
Toasted honeycomb and toffee lead, with vanilla fudge and pistachio standing out on the palate. Light anise and baked apple fill a buttery sip. Soft oak and a touch of mid-palate dryness close a round finish.
