Crown Royal Golden Apple 23 Year Old Canadian Whisky
Twenty-three years in oak is a long time for any whisky, and this one carries the evidence quietly. The extended maturation softens the grain and draws out a golden-apple character that sits at the center of the whisky rather than perched on top of it.
Baked apple leads, warm and sweet the way fruit gets when it has spent time in the oven. Caramel and vanilla fill in behind it, giving the whisky a rounded, almost dessert-like weight. Cinnamon runs through the sweetness and keeps it from turning cloying, while dried fruit and oak settle in at the close with the depth those decades in barrel earned.
At 80 proof it drinks gently, which makes it easy to return to on an ordinary evening as readily as a special one. Serve it neat in a small pour, or over a single large cube if you want the apple to stretch out. The 750 mL bottle looks the part on a back bar.
