El Jolgorio Espadín Mezcal
El Jolgorio's espadín mezcal takes an unusual turn: distilled in 2011, it spent nine years in an ex-bourbon cask before bottling. That long rest shows up as caramelized banana and vanilla, sweet without being sugary, with dried fruit sitting underneath and a warm run of baking spice through the finish.
Espadín roasted underground gives mezcal its familiar smoke, and here it reads more like woodsmoke around the edges than a wall of it. Oak and molasses fill in the back half and give the whole thing weight. At 92 proof (46% ABV) it drinks easily on its own, and it holds up in a highball with soda if you'd rather stretch it.
This is a single barrel bottling, additive free, in a 750 mL bottle. Nothing added means what you taste came from the agave, the roast, and the wood.
