H. Deringer 5 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey
H. Deringer 5 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey is an Indiana MGP bourbon — about 70% corn, 26% rye, 4% malted barley — aged five years in new charred American oak and bottled at 92 proof in a crystal decanter whose cork is a replica Deringer pistol. Named for gunsmith Henry Deringer, the first release was 2,987 bottles. The rye in the mash is what you taste as spice against caramel and vanilla from the char. It belongs in a spirit-forward cocktail as much as in a glencairn.
Retailer tastings keep caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, dried fruit, and brown sugar in front, with roasted nuts, cinnamon, and a light rye tickle. The mouthfeel is full and silky for 92; the finish is medium-long, sweet oak with a little cream. It drinks like a well-mannered high-rye bourbon in a bottle meant to sit on the bar.
