Hampden Estate Great House Pure Single Jamaican Rum
This is a loud Jamaican rum, and it makes no apology for it. Hampden Estate sits in Trelawny, the parish most associated with high-ester pot still distillate, and the Great House bottling leads with exactly that: overripe banana and pineapple, bright enough to fill the room before you taste anything.
Underneath the fruit there is molasses, thick and slightly bitter, with citrus peel cutting across the top. Spice runs through the back end alongside the funk that gives this style its name, more savory than sweet. Aging happened in ex-bourbon casks in Jamaica's heat, which works faster on a rum than cooler climates do. It is bottled additive free, so what you taste is the distillate and the wood.
Sturdy enough for a daiquiri or a rum punch, and interesting enough to sip on its own. 750 mL.
