La Maison & Velier Flag Series Cambodia 2016 Rum
La Maison & Velier's Flag Series looks for good rum wherever it is made, and this one comes from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, distilled in 2016 and given eight years in ex-bourbon casks split between tropical and continental aging. That combination shows: the warmth of the tropics pushes the wood along quickly, while the cooler years let it settle.
Cola is the first thing most people notice, sweet and slightly herbal, with red fruit sitting just behind it. Molasses gives the body weight, and vanilla runs underneath. The finish turns drier, with pepper and toasted oak trading places until the last of it fades.
This is a single barrel bottled at cask strength, 97.4 proof (48.7% ABV), with nothing added. It handles a cube well if you want to open it up, but it is balanced enough to drink as it comes. 750 mL.
