Opus One Overture Napa Valley Red Wine
Pour this one an hour before dinner and it opens up nicely. Blackberry and plum lead, ripe but not jammy, with cherry running underneath and a dried rose note that shows up as the wine warms. French oak sits in the background, adding cocoa and a firm edge rather than sweetness. There is an earthy, mineral thread through the finish that keeps it from feeling heavy.
The fruit comes from Oakville, in the heart of Napa Valley, and the blend draws on all five red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Each brings something different, and together they give the wine its breadth without any one variety taking over.
At 14.5% ABV it has weight but stays balanced, and the tannins are smooth enough to drink now. A 750 mL bottle, and a good red to keep on hand for a weeknight roast or a table of friends.
