Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2004 Brut Champagne
At 12% ABV, this is Champagne with a light touch and real substance underneath. The 2004 harvest brings together Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, and the wine spent an extended stretch on its lees in bottle before release, which shows in the fine, persistent bead and the warm brioche note that runs beneath everything else.
White flowers open it, delicate and clean, with citrus close behind. Pear and peach fill in the body, riper and rounder than the first impression suggests, while a mineral thread keeps the whole thing bright rather than soft. The finish is long and dry, returning to that faint bread-crust warmth.
The 750 mL bottle is the right size for a table of four who want a proper pour each. Serve it cold but not ice-cold, and use a white wine glass rather than a flute if you have one — the aromatics need the room.
