Ex-bourbon American oak carries the smoke; ex-Oloroso sherry butts bring the raisin sweetness; the two are married and bottled at 108.4 proof without chill filtration. The name is Loch Uigeadail, the water the distillery actually uses. Ardbeg’s Committee has voted it their favorite in the lineup.
At full strength the distillery finds Christmas cake, walnut oil, and Parma violet beside ocean spice, cedar, pine needles, a coal fire, and oiled leather, with treacle toffee and chocolate-coated raisins coming through the smoke. The texture is rich and mouth-coating. Winter spice hits first, then honey-glazed smoked meat and chewy treacle, and the finish is long, raisiny, and mocha-like, with aromatic smoke still in the glass.
