Cazcanes No. 7 Añejo Tequila
Eighteen months in American oak sits behind this añejo from the Tequila Valley in Jalisco, made from Blue Weber agave and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV). That's a gentle strength for an añejo, and it shows: the oak influence is present without taking over the agave underneath.
Cooked agave leads, sweet and vegetal in the way only properly steamed piñas taste. Dark chocolate sits alongside it, a little bitter, giving the sweetness something to push against. Vanilla runs through the whole pour, and the finish turns toward caramelized toffee with a dry edge of oak.
It is additive free, which means what you smell and taste comes from the agave and the barrel rather than anything added later. Straightforward enough to drink neat on a weeknight, and it holds its shape over ice if you'd rather. The 750 mL bottle is an easy one to keep on hand.
