Ten years of aging sit behind this Venezuelan rum, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) from spirit distilled in 2013. Warm tropical conditions in Lara push maturation along faster than a cooler climate would, and the result is a rum with real weight for its age without turning heavy or syrupy.
Dried fruit leads, backed by vanilla and a soft caramel sweetness that never tips into candy. Underneath there is something drier: tobacco leaf and cocoa, with toasted oak firming up the finish. The texture is round and easy, which makes this a straightforward sipper rather than something you need to work at.
Ex-bourbon and ex-single-malt casks did the long work here, with a sherry finish rounding things off at the end. Good neat, and sturdy enough to hold its shape over ice or in an old fashioned. 750 mL.
