At 131 proof (65.5% ABV), this is cask strength rum from Santiago de los Caballeros, bottled without the usual softening. The weight is obvious from the first sip, but so is the sweetness underneath it: toffee, thick and warm, with dried fruit sitting just behind.
Time in American and French oak has pulled the rum in two directions. Vanilla rounds out the front, while baking spice and deep oak give the back end grip and length. The heat is real, though it reads as intensity rather than sharpness, and a single cube opens the whole thing up without washing out the toffee.
The 750 mL bottle is a good one to keep within reach — full-flavored enough for a slow evening pour, and sturdy enough to hold its own in a rum old fashioned or a daiquiri built with a heavy hand.
