L’Encantada Domaine Couloumé 1990 31 Year Old Armagnac Ténarèze
L'Encantada bottles Armagnac from single estates in Gascony, and this one comes from Domaine Couloumé, distilled in 1990 from traditional Armagnac varieties and left in Gascon oak until it was ready. It is drawn from a single barrel at cask strength, so nothing has been softened on the way to the bottle.
Prune and raisin lead, dark and concentrated the way long-aged Armagnac tends to go. Underneath sits vanilla and the sweet-savory hum of rancio, the note that only decades in wood can produce. Tobacco and old oak run through the finish, with baking spice lingering after the fruit has faded. There is real weight here, and the texture coats rather than slips away.
A 750 mL bottle, and a good one to keep within reach for evenings when a full-strength brandy is the right answer.
