L’Encantada Domaine Cutxan 1995 Bas-Armagnac
This is Armagnac in its most unvarnished form. Distilled in 1995 from Baco 22A, the grape that gives Bas-Armagnac much of its dark, plummy weight, it spent its life in a single Gascon oak cask and went into the bottle at cask strength, undiluted.
Prune and dried fig lead, thick and sweet without being sugary. Underneath sits tobacco leaf and the soft vanilla that long oak contact brings, while baking spice warms the back end. The rancio is unmistakable — that savory, faintly nutty note that only decades in wood produce, and it lingers well after the sweetness fades.
Because nothing was blended away and nothing was cut, this drinks with real intensity. A small pour in a tulip-shaped glass, sipped slowly after dinner, is all it asks. 750 mL.
