L’Encantada Domaine du Pouy Rum Cask Finish Bas-Armagnac
Twenty years in oak, then a stint in a Jamaican rum cask to finish. This Bas-Armagnac was distilled in 2001 from Colombard and Ugni Blanc grown in the Armagnac-Ténarèze, and it comes from a single barrel at cask strength, so nothing has been smoothed over.
Apricot and dried plum lead, soft and jammy rather than sharp. Caramel runs underneath them, and orange peel cuts through with a bright, slightly bitter edge. Vanilla and baking spice settle in at the end and stay a while. It drinks warm and full without turning heavy, and being uncut, it takes a few drops of dilution well if you want the fruit to open up further.
A straightforward, well-aged brandy in a 750 mL bottle — good after dinner, and steady enough to pour on an ordinary evening without ceremony.
