Fiji doesn't send much rum abroad, and what does arrive tends to be loud in the best way. This one comes from Lautoka, distilled in 2012 and bottled from a single barrel without additives, so what's in the bottle is what came out of the cask.
Banana leads, ripe and a little green at the edges, with tropical fruit behind it and a herbal streak that keeps things from turning sweet. Vanilla from the ex-bourbon cask softens the middle stretch, then pepper and a flash of solvent sharpen the finish alongside dry oak. Ten years of aging, split between tropical and continental conditions, has taken the edge off without sanding away the distillery's character.
At 130.6 proof (65.3% ABV) this is cask strength and drinks like it. A few drops of water open up the fruit considerably. 750 mL.
