La Maison & Velier Flag Series Trinidad 2002 20 Year Old Caroni Rum
Distilled in 2002 and drawn from a single ex-bourbon barrel, this Caroni spent 15 years in the heat of Trinidad before finishing its 20 years in the cooler air of continental cellars. Tropical aging works quickly, and those first years left their mark; the slower stretch that followed let the rum settle rather than push further into the wood.
Red fruit opens things up, sweeter and brighter than the color suggests, with brown sugar and molasses underneath giving the whole thing weight. Licorice threads through the middle, and there is a cool green flick of mint against mature oak on the finish. Vanilla stays in the background, more texture than flavor.
At 126.2 proof this is bottled at full cask strength, so it arrives dense and warm and takes a few drops well if you want to open the fruit further. The 750 mL bottle comes from Port of Spain.
