Dry, dark and firmly structured. This is a medium- to full-bodied Cabernet with bold fruit and a savory edge. The nose shows cassis and black cherry, with dried herbs and bay leaf. The palate brings dark currant, graphite, iron and black tea. Toasted oak adds warm spice. The tannins are firm and finely grained, and the finish is long and dusty.
Nickel & Nickel’s Branding Iron Vineyard covers eight and a half acres in western Oakville, at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. Well-drained clay loam and full morning and afternoon sun give the fruit a long, even hang time, and true to the winery’s single-vineyard approach, the wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The cool, late-ripening 2023 Napa vintage was aged in French oak and bottled at 14.5% ABV in a 750 mL bottle.
Built for the cellar, it rewards two to four years of patience and should drink well for two decades. If opening now, decant for an hour and serve just below room temperature.
