Cardhu 16 Year Old Special Release 2022 Single Malt Scotch Whisky is Diageo’s 2022 Special Release from Cardhu in Speyside, bottled at cask strength, 116 proof. Master blender Dr. Craig Wilson selected it for that year’s Elusive Expressions set. The whisky aged 16 years in refill and re-charred American oak, then was finished in Jamaican pot-still rum casks. Those rum casks lay mango, pineapple, and rum toffee over Cardhu’s honeyed malt, while the re-charred oak keeps a peppery, drying edge.
The official nose is lemon zest, white grape, pink grapefruit, and ripe mango, with pepper and oak above it. The palate is creamy and full: rum toffee, spiced pineapple, and green banana, then crisp oak. Whisky Advocate found grapefruit, ripening mango, lime, and grilled pineapple, and, once the 116 proof settles, dried mango, green banana, vanilla, and aniseed. The finish is sweet and peppery, shorter than the nose.
