Habitation Velier Mhoba Pure Single South African Rum
This is a loud, fruit-forward rum. Distilled in 2017 in Mpumalanga and bottled from a single barrel at 129.2 proof (64.6% ABV), it holds nothing back. Guava and passion fruit come through bright and ripe, with soft banana underneath and a thread of caramel that keeps it from turning sharp.
Four years in ex-bourbon casks under a warm climate does more than four years in a cool one, and you can taste it in the weight here. Smoke and oak sit at the back, dried herbs cut across the fruit, and the whole thing finishes long and dry. It is bottled additive free, so what you get is the spirit and the cask.
At 64.6% ABV, a small pour goes a long way. It stands up well in a daiquiri or a tall drink with lime and soda, where the tropical fruit stays legible even when diluted. 750 mL.
