Rhum Barbancourt Volcanic Cane Islay Peated Cask Finish Haitian Rum
Barbancourt works in fresh cane juice, and that origin shows here from the first sip. Candied citrus opens bright and sweet, then peat smoke drifts across it — the mark of an Islay finish laid over rum that had already spent fifteen years in ex-Cognac and bourbon casks. Baked pear sits underneath, softer and rounder than the smoke above it.
Cinnamon warms the back end, and a green snap of fresh cane returns at the close with a twist of pepper. At 93.4 proof there is real weight to it, enough that the smoke never overwhelms the fruit. Tropical aging in Haiti moves quickly, and the wood here reads as depth rather than dryness.
Distilled in 2008 near Port-au-Prince and bottled at 750 mL. Sip it neat first; the peat and the cane sugar find their balance after a minute or two.
